Passage to Tibet
Got picked up at the hotel around 5am in the morning to go to the airport. People standing in line for the destination seem to be a different crowd. Needless to say this is going to be a very special journey.
The plane landed in Lhasa around 11am. I got my “voodoo medicine”. Julie was laughing at me. But 10 minutes later she came back with some other medicine asking me to have it. She said she got the first strike by the high-land reaction. In fact, according to the tour guide, the first reaction would only come in about 3-4 hours after you finish consuming the oxygen you brought from the lower land.
The afternoon was left open for rest. I was trying to lie down. That was when I said, “Julie, I cannot sleep lying down.” So I sat. As if being urged by some outer force, I was pressed to breathe very rapidly. I told myself to slow down, inhaling and exhaling very slowly. That seemed to work.
We were not allowed to take bath or shower. The food is terrible. It didn’t help when you have to share the food with some strangers around the same table.
