My First and Last Preschool Field Trip

At the risk of exaggerating a situation, I’d say that this was a once in a life time opportunity. There are a few days left for Sienna to be a preschooler. This was the last filed trip she would take before grade one. And I finally could go with her as a volunteer parent. It was a fruit farm about an hour away from the city. There were two teachers and four parents taking care of 20 kids. I was asked to watch 4 of them including Sienna.

It was such a treat to observe how Sienna interacts with other children. Now I could understand why she always gets invited to birthday parties. On the other hand, this turned out to be a field trip for me to observe what it means to be a preschooler teacher. I realized it's really not an easy job. In those 5 hours, I probably counted 133 times the 4 kids in my group, least one of them went missing.

It's not something you pick up as a job. I am not talking about qualifications here. You must love what you do and you must have the right personality. These make the job easier. That teacher I saw today is constantly nervous and stressed out. She really shouldn’t have become a teacher for small kids. I don't mind if she is a professor. In general, they work so hard to get so little pay. If nothing serious, those parents should be ashamed for complaining about the teacher.
