An All Vegie Party

The maid who worked for our friend’s family downstairs for nearly 6 years decided to quit. She took care the family of three, cooking, cleaning and shopping. She even cooks meals for a 3-member commercial production team located in the compound. She does all these to get paid just under $200 a month. That’s good money for her, worth leaving her husband and two children behind thousand miles away. She doesn’t read but possesses a great personality. She sometimes watches Sienna when we have to go out in the evening. We two families threw a party for her, a vegetarian feast mostly cooked by our domestic helper (I still cannot use the word “maid” when it comes to our case). She is a vegetarian. We want to show our respect or there might never be a chance.

These girls work, we pay. It sounds like a fair deal. But from a humane point of view, I feel hugely indebted.
