A Friend's Friend
We had a visitor, typically, a friend’s friend. He is a young Spanish boy who brought a something for us from our dear friend in Barcelona. Knowing probably two or three words of Chinese, this young and intelligent guy was hired as a manager to open a top-notch restaurant in Beijing. All was good for a few months. The place had to be shut down due to all kinds of reasons. Upset as he is, he has been courted by quite a few of potential employers here in the hospitality industry. It just goes to show what a land of opportunities the country is right now. It feels like everybody is out on the street doing something. There is no time for grieving, enjoying or pondering. If something doesn’t work out, something else comes up. Right here in China, I observe this up and close with a sense of detachment as I still do what I have been enjoying doing the best -- which is nothing.
