Dad’s Anti-Democracy View
When I watch the updates of the US presidential race on TV, my Dad would join me. I too sometimes join him when he watches the reports of the corruption case against Taiwanese former president. The topic of democracy would come up. Why would a society choose to have a democracy? He questions. “How could you trust someone who goes around and tries to show his best parts only to the world? That’s like a salesperson. He’s got something to sell.” He is right in a way. He doesn’t talk about how a totalitarian system would be better than a democracy. As his daughter though, I understand. He wouldn’t say one is better than the other when you are made to pick one and discard the other. You take what’s already there for you and make the best out of it regardless what name it is. No doubt, I am his daughter.
