the Blue Dress Blue
I bought a blue Cinderella Halloween dress today and brought it home. I asked Sienna what she wanted to be on Halloween's. “Cinderella,” replied she. “What are you going to wear?” I tested. "This," she pointed at a pink dress she put on herself after school. I said, “But this is pink, right?” She paused, “Yeah, the Fairy Godmother will wave a magic wand and then it’s going to be blue.” I felt something in my eyes. But I went on, “You asked Mommy to get you a blue dress, what happened?” She said, matter-of-factly, “I cried and didn’t listen to you.” I held her in my arms and held back my tears, “Be good, my baby, Mommy will have a big surprise for you.” Her eyes just lit up. Still she didn’t mention, or apparently didn’t even think of the blue dress that she thought she had ruined her chance to have.
I feel like I am the wicked stepmother bullying her in the name of disciplining. Maybe Sienna is the perfect daughter who doesn’t need to be disciplined after all.
