Wai, Wait a Minute...
Over lunch time yesteray, I went to get a present for a boy's birthday party today. There must be two different worlds between boys and girls at this age, or probably any other age. In the world that Sienna and I know little about stands out the Superman. Standing in front of a Superman figure inside the toy store, I decided to call J's Dad to make sure if J is over with Superman or not...
The cell phone rang and got picked up righ away. A male voice said, "wai," meaning "hello" in Chinese. Righ away, I hung up thinking I had a wrong number. Apparently I was Chinese calling a non-Chinese person and by accident I caught a Chinese person. But I did have the right name. Suspicioiusly, I pressed "redial." "Min, Min," the other party started shouting my name, trying to stop me from hunging up again... He turned out to be J's Dad.
Before J was born, J's Dad, also named J, and his mothter L, had decided to get J to learn Chinese. Neither of them has even one thousandth of Chinese in them and nor do they speaks any of the language, well except J's perfect "wai." A Chinese nanny was hired before birth and has been working for them since. The family try every opportunity possible to hung out with Chinsese like us. Their efforts are paying off very well so far.
