A Happy Party

I told Sienna we were going to have a party on Sunday. "A happy birthday party?" asked she. "Just a happy party," said I. And that's what it turned out to be.

Either of us belong to the group. But somehow we were invited to join a party for alumni of the Chinese Central Concervatory of Music who live in the city. "We are still looking for a venue," said the friend on the phone. "Oh, come to our house then," said Daddy. Not because Mommy will do most of the work cooking and setting up things, this is just how generous and hospital Daddy is. And Mommy I happen to be the same way.

At least 30 guests on the list. We know probably 6 of them. That didn't bother me. I had 40 guests for Sienna's first birthday at our old townhouse beofore. Only this time, it was going to be mostly a potluck. I've never hosted a potluck before. If they didn't have enough food, it would still be my responsibilty.

In the food department, I prepared two huge pieces of Atlantic salmon filets roasted with garlic and peper. A huge pot of seafood fried rice was very colorful with big red pawns, scallop, minced pork, dried mushroom and green onions. I also made another vegie dish, i.e., green beans with white garlic mixed in.

the major undertaking though was to get the house together. The wholse house has been turned into Sienna's play house. Such a headache... I had to put them out of sight, and out of mind for the time being. She was again unbelievablly cooperative. She watched "Shrek 2" and played Barbie herself.

When all was nice and clean, the house was decorated with touches of red to celebrate the Chinese New Year, Valentines day and whatever occasion we could think of. We had a bunch of fresh red tulips, red candles and even all the disposible plates and napkins were red.

When guests came and ate, they did their best by filling up our with music. The principle violist of Toronto Symphony Orchestra, just getting off her afternoon performance, offered us the most exquisite Brahms' Viola Sonata in F minor. A composer and his wife snuggled up on our little old upright and did a true piano duet. Then an amature magician started fooling us around on a set of poker with his unique sense of human and wits. And they chatted -- music, art and life...

Sienna found a little friend, Doreen, who was about year old. We were all having a blast. It was a happy party!
