Risky Business

Sometimes I talk on the phone at work with friends when I keep working on parts of the project that don’t require much of the brain work. Nobody notices anything as long as I can keep my voice low.

Because I talk low, the less sensitive type on the other end of the line doesn’t try to understand the situation I am in. When I have to be less responsive than usual, she would go, "Are you there? Oh, I cannot hear you." So, I take the risk to raise my voice.

My low voice also prompts the more sensitive type to become suspicious. She would go, "Are you ok? You sound really low?" Pressed by this, I am also tempted to raise my voice and show my usual high spirit.

The over-sensitive type though would apparently be affected by my way of talking. She would start talking very low even when she sits in an empty room all by herself. "Hey, speak up, why are you talking so low like me?" I am about to yell out with my real voice.

Talking on the phone at work is really a risky business.
