Real Stories Behind Surreal Paintings

Our artist Daddy creates great works of art. There are always stories about how people fall in love with a piece and therefore collect it for themselves and loved ones. We don't get to hear all of them as the works are mostly handled through professional galleries. This very touching story though came from one of those galleries itself. The galleries owner W passed away from cancer and his real-life partner H gave up his law practice to take on his passion and business. This is the new owner, wrote us a few days ago while he was discussing a date for a new solo show:

"Thank you for the opportunity to go through Lui's new works. It is an incredible body of work. Lui's work represents exactly the direction that W wanted for the gallery to go in before he died. I don't know if I told you, but when W was dying, he asked me to go out and find new artists who represent what I think W's vision of the gallery would be. He wanted to make sure that my tastes in art matched his well. In August, I found a new artist I had never heard of before. I sent W several very excited e-mails entitled "VERY IMPORTANT SURREALIST!!" W opened them and saw them and said that they are fantastic -- but that we already represent this artist. The artist was of course Lui."

How surreal! How sad!! And how inspiring!!! When I read the letter, my mind was filled with this image Lui created last year. The heaven and earth, the above and below, the flight and fright, the life and death... As far as we know, a couple in Denmark bought this one as a wedding present for their friends. I wonder what the story would be over there?
