Sad Movies No More
I took Sienna and two 10-year-olds to see "Ice Age - Meltdown". Being an adult minority of the group, I didn't get to have my aisle seat at the back. These kids don't understand: it was such a sacrifice on my part to sit in the middle of the 10th row with them. Otherwise, the movie was quite entertaining, more so than those set out to entertain the adults. I laughed out with them whenever prompted. I particularly love Queen Latifah's voice.
"Ice Age - Meltdown" is about the end of the world for the animal kingdom, perfect materials for a sad movie. Yet, it ends effortlessly in usual glorious optimism... I always think before the bitterness of life gets to them, kids need to have tastes some bitterness through books and movies. It's to enrich their experiences in senses, and to give a little exercise in coping with reality. They need to take a variety of nutrients instead of only sugar coated and processed food all the time. Well, I am being idealistic. Taking kids to a movie nowadays is like taking them to a candy store. It's filled with sugar mass-produced by factories like Disney and Hollywood. They simply cannot afford to have a sad or unhappy ending.
