Commies And Enemies

It turned out to be such a long day yesterday. After the movie, we went to fly the kite with Olivia's family. Then we drove all the way downtown, back to the theater for a screening of a documentary directed by Daddy's friend. W is in town with his family to attend the Hotdocs. A few years back, we went a very similar screening of his documentary debut "Sunrise Over Tiananmen Square", Which later on won him an Oscar namination.

Yesterday's film is a piece of refined journalistic work that takes on a unique personal approach. It really made my day after the "candy store" experience earlier. "They Chose China" tells an untold story of a couple of dozen American soldiers who became POWs in during the Korean War. They decided to stay in China instead of going back to McCarthy's America. They were treated very decently by the commies. It appears that W is speaking in praise of the Commies. Underneath, it's quite revealing how humanity is such a prevailing force . Even commies, the worst of all enimies, can be turned into friends given the change of time and space.
Three families went to dinner after the screening. A lot of talks about the documentary. A lot of talks about how the commies in China are not longer what they used to be -- not for the better or worse.
