The Meaning of Victoria's Day
Not until last Friday afternoon, I was reminded that it was a long weekend ahead. That just says how unprepared or unplanned I am for any holidays as always. But who needs a plan to spend an extra day with your family?
Last night, on our way to a school yard for fireworks, Sienna told me Victoria Day is to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's birthday. I asked, "should that be Queen Victoria's birthday since it's named so?" She said, diplomatically, "I don't know, mommy, Mrs. Ahmed told us." I promised that I will google it and find out for sure. I did and as it turned out, it is meant to celebrate both their birthdays plus King Edward VII's, whose natural birthday was November 9.
We two families burned a total worth of at least $100 in fireworks with a few speculators. That was in celebration of a holiday we don't even know the real meaning of it... I would stay so far away from the sounds and the sights of the fireworks. There are elements of damager in the activity. Sienna was ecstatic - I really needed to be near her and the fireworks in order to feel a bit safer. And it continued to be so chilly. I bundled up in a sweater, a down vest and a jacket all included.
Happy Victoria's Day! Whatever it means, it means to me an extra day off.
