Isn't It Something?
Last night, sienna was looking for the tunes on the piano for her favorite song. After a mere couple of trials, she was singing the whole song and playing exactly the right tunes.
I love you forever.
I like you for always.
As long as I am living,
My baby you will be.
I was so moved by the song as well as my discovery of her being so naturally gifted. She went on to try another song that she only knows the first sentence, “Somewhere over the rainbow...” As a starter, she hit the middle C, right on. Without hesitation, she went on to the high C – right on again. Searching freely and purposefully and humming, she even tested some black keys that she never got to touch in her lessons...
I called the piano teacher, our dear friend Y, for a two-minute report about my discovery. Over the weekend, Y was telling a violin teacher at a gathering about how Sienna carries the perfect tunes naturally. She was talking about how, without any hint, she could jump one scale and land on the same spot. I didn’t quite understand. Then I thought what she did tonight could be a proof. “Isn’t it something?” I asked. Y said, “Of course it is, big time.” She is like my sister. She tells me when I go crazy and wild.
I always believe, being a parent is to observe and help. I don’t get to observe how Sienna is doing in other areas at school. I leave them to the teacher. Music is something I know next to nothing about. To me, this is a perfect position to play that role of an observer and a helper. Everyone is born gifted for one thing or another. Like the water in the well, it needs to be taped and pumped. Or else it will dry out.
Now, with the help of Y, when I observe that in Sienna, I want to help her see it herself. That’s why I had the talk with her about gift. Looks like she is completely bought into it. She was a bit disappointed that she couldn’t give her gift to me. However, she told me last night, “Mommy, I know you lost your gift in music because you didn’t practice it. But you gave it to ME. That’s why I have the gift.”

I've always admired your attitude towards the way you bring Sienna up. What an interesting theory.. to observe and to be a helper.. Hmmmm.. i have to think about that too.. :)

to merely protect and to guide can be misleading and imposing sometimes. to observe helps to render the help that is deemed necessary. I am still thinking...

The more observation you made, the greater suprise you found from them. You are in shock and don't belive what you see and hear....keep record for these precious moments. Thank you for sharing your great stories with us. I've learned a lot from you. Thank you, Min
