Community Service

The husband who creats beauties on canvas has been chosen to choose the beauties for our community. He will be sitting on a five-member panel to judge at this year's Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant. We went to "Meet the Judge" dinner tonight. While Lui was mingling with the contestants, I sat on another table with the host and hostess of the live TV show and ran into some familiar faces. Many years ago, I was substituding their Mandarin news anchor for 2 summers at this hosting cable company. I also met a lovely lady who hosts the daily morning news radio show. She turned out to be one of my friend's idols. "You talked to her that casually? How disrespectful!" That was how my friend reacted to my reaccount of the evening.

The Cable company invited some stars from Hong Kong as guests of honor. We didn't know them either. We are so out of touch with that part of Chinese culture. It's interesting now to see how Mandarin and Cantoneses speaking people are managing to do things together switching between the two languages or having to use English. They will have to find an interpreter for Lui so that he can understand the other half of the contestants.
