Change of Heart

It took a few years. When I was a corporate worker, everybody went to get a cup of Tim Hortons’coffee in the morning. Two of the people went for their Starbucks in the afternoon. I didn’t understand them. Did they do it to be special?

A couple of months ago, we were in China where there was no Tim Hortons. We spent about 10 bucks for two cups of Starbucks. I placed my order like I did here, “coffee with cream and no sugar.” The cup came out with a cap of whipped cream on the top. “Oh, no, the liquid cream.” So the girl stirred the whipped cream… The coffee was of course awful.

I came back here and started to go to Starbucks just to find out what was so awful, the coffee or the whipped and stirred cream. I started to get the taste of the much stronger flavor in Starbucks’ cup. I cannot bear the diluted Tim Hortons any more.

I felt a bit guilty and felt the need to confess to the husband about my change of heart. I was very straightforward about it. “Look, that’s how people fall out of love with each other. Just like that. I am no longer in love with Tim Hortons.” Before he could attack me in any way morally, I delved into the topic further, “Look how much we can charm each other to stay together forever. And of course, look how much we can put up with each other!”
