Rethinking about the “Box House”

When we lived in the big house back in Canada, it was hard just to think about moving into a “box house” in China. Once we are inside it, you know what? It’s not too hard at all. It’s bright everywhere in this 1600 square foot space when the sun is out. You can pretty much keep the short sleeves on and socks off all winter long. You don’t worry about the grasses and bushes overgrowing in the yard. You don’t worry about people slip on your un-shoveled driveway. You still don’t have the kind of neighbors to borrow toothpaste or soy source from. But if something really serious happens, it’s easy to knock at the door next door or just run out to the balcony and shout on the balcony for help.

Another advantage of living in a “box house” is, quite unexpectedly, the quietness. It’s so quiet here at our corner unit some 12 floors up in this extremely noisy city. The hard wood floor throughout is laid on top of concrete. It never creates squeaky noise. If there is anything bad about it, that would be: there are times when the husband and I scared each other because one would show up suddenly without any announcements made by the footsteps.
