Onto the Second Book

Just realized today is the day Sienna turned 3 years and 10 months old. It's safe to say at this age, she started to read. The second book in the Primary Phonics series came in a few days ago. Twice as long as the first one "Tab and Mac." Sienna used less time to get a hang on reading it out loud. She told me her teacher were very happy to see that she was able to read the book.

I cannot really take credits for Sienna's progress on this. So far, I only read an English book to Sienna in English if it rhythms, Dr. Suess' "Green eggs and ham" and "Madeline", for example. the rest of the books, English or Chinese, I read out loud in Chinese. we make an effort to speak to her in Chinese mandarin only at home.
The teachers at her preschool have been doing a great job. Sienna never really learnt 26 letters except the "abc" song she or everybody sings. the teachers started from phonics. I don't actually know how. but they made a point that we should NOT teach her how to pronounce "abc" like we would in spelling. So when she sees a word, she will have more or less an idea as how it should sound. I think this is a very good method. Another girl Amy, a little 2 year older, learning the same method and can pronounce incredible long dinasours names.

And here is the new book that she is mastering. I cannot believe it. She knows every single word. This is so special for someone who started to talk so very late.
The Tin Man

Dad has a van.
The van is yellow.
The pig can sit in the van.
Tim ran to the van.
The pig hid.
Tim sat in the van.
Dad ran to the van.
Dad sat in the van.
The pig hid.
Is a van fit for pig?
The pig ran.
The pig ran to a pit.
Can the pig fit in the pit?
The pig hid in the pit.
The pig did sit in the pit.
The pig had a nap.
Tim ran and ran.
Tim ran to a big can.
It was a big tin can.
Tim sat on it.
The tin can was a man.
It was a tin man.
The tin man was big.
The pig ran to Tim.
Tim sat on the tin man.
Tim sat on his lap.
Can the pig sit on the tin man?
Can the pig fit on his lap?
The pig is big.
The pig ran.
Tim has a pan and a lid.
The pan is his hat.
Tim is a tin man.
Tim has a pal.
The tin man is his pal.
Tim and his pal ran.

  • hi, mrs tweety, you don't worry. to be honest with you, siennan still doesn't talk much. when kids of her age started to say words, she uttered none. when they started talking sentences, she said a few words, to the point. then when they talk in paragraphs, she says a sentence or two. if i ask her again, she said, "mom, i already told you."

the old chinese believe the late talkers are smarter. i comforted myself with that. and my husband firmly believe that language is sometimes very restrictive also you really have different ways to observe them. when she was definitely more than 2 years old, one day i asked, almost to myself, "sienna, do you ever talk?" she said, "only a little mommy." i was shocked...
