The Leads in Leed
As it turned out, the bombing attacks in London were the works of some home-grown British Muslim extremists from Leeds, a city in Northan England. I happened to spend an entire month one summer in Leeds attending a huge Catholic wedding of a dear friend of mine. I don't recall in this quiet city of less than 180,000 population that I ever met or saw any Muslim people there. I was thrilled just to see a couple of Chinese students at the university, who spoke my lanuage. Yesterday, I sent an email to C, this friend of mine, expressing my thoughts and concerns. What does it feel like now if the wedding is scheduled for now? Thinking about what the world is turning into, I don't even know what to make out of it.
A message attached to flowers near a bombing site in London says, "For all those lost following just another ordinary day, thoughts and prayers from a fellow commuter..." I am one of those daily commuters. I don't feel like going back to take subway now, as if staying above ground on the commuter train would be safer. My friend Abby goes, "Oh, don't be ridiculous. It's not here. But it's coming..." Thank you, my friend. Let's all take care of ourselves and each other, one day at a time.
