My Driver

Every morning around the same time, I run out of the house in such a great hurry that I don't even have the time to extend a "good bye" hug or kiss to my hubby. I would pull the door open and yell, "Sorry, my driver is waiting for me."

I get on the bus that takes me to the subway. Always being the first passenger on board, I am obliged to share morning talks on news or weather with the driver. So that driver becomes "my driver". The company changes the bus driver every two or three months. I suspect that's part of the mechanism to prevent situation that could lead to ticket evasion, at least. A driver could easily get acquainted with his or her passengers on the route.

On our route, there have been a few drivers in the past couple of years. Most of them are very very nice. I call these my drivers. My driver would mention to me if I missed a day or two. Sometimes, I was so busy chatting getting on the bus that I forget to pay my fare until I got to the subway or until the next morning. Sometimes, I ran our of ticket as well as changes, I can still travel to the subway without feeling embarrased. My driver has the trust in me that I will pay the next day.

A few days ago, my driver told me that an accident just happened when he was on his way here. So I transferred to another bus to get to a different subway station to avoid wait on his bus. Yesterday, my driver informed me that the subway stopped running. I turned around and went home to wait for the update.

I made breakfast for the whole family: bacon, toast, scrambled eggs and tea. I dressed Sienna. Daddy and I went to send Sienna to school to drop her off. It was an hour late when I smooth-sailed down the subway to arrive at my office. The shuttle bus would have taken me the same amount of time. I would have been so raffled waiting in the cold and getting sandwiched on the bus. On top of the hassles avoided, it was such an unexpected treat for Sienna to have both mommy and daddy to start her day. All thanks to my driver.
