Decoding the Uncoded

All right, the painting the husband Lui Liu created early this year and I titled, "Beijing 2008", is causing huge winds and wavies, as Chinese would say, among Chinese internet surfers. On one of the BBS boards, a message posted by someone trying to decode the messages of the painting has been viewed for more than 50,000 times in the past 2 days with about 800 follow-up comments.

Incredible! People started to attribute political meanings to the painting. A lot of them suspect there are secret codes that the artist was trying to convey through the work. They compete to find out what these messages are... This is clearly becoming "The Da Vinci Code", in Chinese version.

The message of the painting in my mind is a much more significant one but far less complicated. It simply points out the trend we all see: an integrating world with all the humanities coming out at play. Yet, like any great piece of work, it leaves so much room for all kinds of interpretations. Nothing is too far-fetched.
