Feeling the Pain

We were sitting at the restaurant near the end of the meal. Sienna and J went underneath the table to have their cave experience. Suddenly J burst out crying. I looked down to check, besides J's crying, Sienna repeated, "I said sorry, I said sorry..." Both of them came up, J started to quiet down after a bit of comfort from the mothers. Sienna on the other hand went hysterical and she was even knocking on the table. "I stepped on J's finger..." she finally let out with a burst. She must have felt the pain of causing another human being's pain after she acutely realized what she stepped on... First she became defensive, then extremely guilty. Luckily the pain J felt was not as much as she thought to be. How could we avoid
pain for our children. It could occur in the least possible place like this. As parents, we could show them how to handle it better or most of times, we will just have to feel it with them.
