Engaged in the Games

I caught this Washington Post headline this morning -- Bush Says It's "Important to Engage" China. The tone is so condescending. Ok, the word “China” could very well be replaced by Iran, Iraq or Korea. It would not have been “Britain” because they are very much engaged.

Mr Bush doesn’t have to make a point of engaging China. China is desperately engaging itself in every possible area in the world community. I am not saying China has the right record when it comes to human rights or anything else. It’s a matter of who makes the call for judgments about whom. When all the business deals get settled under the table, isn’t it pretentious to keep the human rights issue always the center piece on the negotiation table? Besides, like a new kid in the class, China has learnt your trick. It’s not the time for you to decide if you want to play with him or not. It’s time to play with him, on an equal basis.
