Pink Heart Misplaced
When I asked Sienna what she wanted from Santa last Christmas, she said, "a heart, a pink heart." "What do you do with a pink heart?" I asked. "I put it in my hand, and look at it. It's beautiful." She didn't just put it in her hand, she put a pink heart bead in one of her ears...
Sienna was complaining about the left ear because the usual stuffed wax sometimes. I took a look at her right ear by accident and I saw something pink inside. It was a pink heart-shaped bead from a Barbie's necklace. When she played with the massive Barbie Doll collection, she kind of just rolled it into her ear!! "Tell Mommy why you did that." I asked her. "Because I like it..." That was her answer.
We went to a walk-in children's clinic. The old doctor pushed it in further when he tried to remove it. So we took her down to the Hospital for Sick Kids. We waited for about 3 hours. Another old doctor, supposed to be more seasoned, tried pumping water inside her ear. It didn't work either. I was holding her and crying myself. After they hassled enough my little girl, they booked another appointment with an ENT (ear, nose & throat) specialist at 9am this morning. She didn't complain about any discomfort though. Abby called a paediatrician and relayed the message that it was no biggie. Still, last night, I didn't sleep even a wink thinking about the possible surgery if everything failed this morning. I was worried sick...
Luckily, first thing this morning, Dr. Licup got to take a look at it. She is a young, beautiful and sweet lady of Indian descendent. She was like one of Sienna's teachers. For that reason, I was relieved already. I knew she was in good hand. Not like yesterday, I was so pissed that those old doctors tried while the common knowledge should have stopped them from trying anything. Or they just wanted to make it an operation that they could charge more money? Am I too cynical to think in that way? Dr. Licup used a long narrow equipment to take it out under the microscope. Piece of cake for her. Sienna was screaming for a few seconds. And she was rewarded by the sweet Dr. Licup a lollypop to lick on.
What a relief for all of us!! When I looked back, I thought I could have handled it better. I should have asked the old doctors not to touch it. I should have waited so that she could see an ENT directly on Monday. This way, she didn't have to suffer getting water pumped into the ear. We just never know enough when it comes to protecting our child.
Sienna is back to the pre-school to catch her lunch. She certainly have something else to think about when she sees a pink heart.
This is an image of the pink heart in question, almost the same size, shape and color. I got it from Mrs. Tweety's blog site.
