A Church Is Like A Club
As I mentioned earlier, I've known J for over a good decade now. I consider her a dear friend of mine even though we didn't spend much time together. She is such a frank or almost flamboyant friend. It shouldn't be a surprise to expect any surprise from her. A couple of days ago, I heard her utter these words over our phone conversation, "You know I am a Mormon..." How was that for a surprise!
I usually keep a respectful distance from religious people. I call them the church goers. In a way, J is one of those church goers?! Not just one church -- she frequents two or three churches on Sundays, religiously. We didn't deal with the topic in details. She did bring up two very important and related points.
1) Having God in you has nothing to do with the act of going to the church.
2) A church is like a club. Going to church is like going to a club. See, you even pay a fee to join.
This has been by far THE most enlightening conversation for me on religion. I mean, EVER. It explains why I don't go to a church or am not planning to go for one -- I am a reluctant member for any club.
As far as faith is concerned, my God, allow me to keep you in me!
