Give Away For a Reason

Yesterday, our big bed was taken to my cousin’s house. Only a few days ago, she sat down on a pretty new Ikea product and clashed it right on time to take over ours. Sienna’s bedroom set went to another family on the same day. Their nearly 3 year old daughter will have more reason to wane her co-sleep habit and move in her own room.

Our house is nearly empty. It has been a major house dumping project. And every family needs one like this once in a while. It’s therapeutic. We probably sold a few hundred dollar worth of things, symbolically through Sienna’s garage sale project. The rest we gave away. We have been happy recipients of quite a few items from this kind of move-out give away. Certain things turned out to be so useful. We kept it years after years until we gave away this time. Certain things, a lithography storage cabinet, for example, are so precious that we will leave it in a small storage space we rent till we come back one day.

Knowing that things will continue to be used in the hands of our friends or even the strangers is more significant than the money we might take pain to collect. That’s why we advertised a few items for people to take for free. A guy responded and came across the town to get a 18-volumn 1954 edition of “Pictorial Encyclopedia Britannia”. He is going to give it as a birthday present to his friend, who is a sure person to appreciate the value of it.

One of the best give away is our rice cooker, a smallest one of its kind. We cook very little rice because I consume very little of it. My friend P is a Jewish single mother to a Chinese girl. She always wants to cook rice for her. That is a similar task for me if I have to make my own bagels for the family. That rice cooker is going to cook rice for her daughter. I gave her also a box of rice and the measuring cup, making it a whole rice cooking kit. She can even use the container to store the rice in the fridge!
