Fish in Two Ponds

I was hanging around at a BBS for overseas Chinese parents today. Somebody was really pissed at work because s/he didn't get the promotion that s/he was pretty sure of getting. So they were discussing how to deal with the situation. I posted a pretending letter to this person's boss and everybody thought it was a nice try. It goes something like this:

Dear XXX, I have to admit that I was a bit caught off guard when I received your letter regarding your decision. I probably had more than my share of confidence in my performance and therefore my chance of getting the promotion. I respect your decision. However, I would really appreciate it if you could find some time so that we could have a chat over this. A better understanding of the criteria regarding promotion and job performance on my part would serve to do my job better in the future. I am looking forward to such communication with you.

Just thought how cultural difference could present such a major setback for the first generation immigrants like us. It's comforting to know our kids will be able to deal with all these a lot more naturally. And yet the task will be how to make them not to act dummy back home in China. On a more positive note though, I would think these present challenges and advantages rather than disadvantages. I am totally blessed and privileged that I can be a real cross-cultural person... Instead of being the fish out of water, we can, in fact, be the fish in two ponds.
