Death of a Tree

"Our apple tree is probably dead..." I said to my friend on the phone.

"What happened?" asked my concerning friend, "Did you take care of it? Did you wrap it?"

"Interesting you asked about wrapping. We actually did, but in the wrong season and for the wrong reason." I admitted with pain.

To keep racoons and squirrels from salvaging the fruits, we wrapped plastic around bottoms of both the pear and apple tree. When we took the wrap down sometime in the fall, we noticed the zillions of worms found home on the apple tree under the barks. The poor apple tree never got to breathe a breath for the whole summer. We suffocated her! How cruel! How cruel is our ignorance!!!

I am so upset knowing we have in fact contributed to the fate of this tree. Unlike the other fertile pear tree, the apple tree didn't have fruits. But it sits in the middle of our vast backyard like a kind old lady holding a protecting umbrella.

I cannot believe this is over. I was sitting under the tree with Paula while Sienna was playing with Thea on the swing hung from the tree's brunch. Paula brought to my attention. I was thinking it was still early for the tree to sprout. I still refuse to accept the reality...
